Houthalen-Helchteren is part of the 'De Wijers' area that stretches over the municipalities of Zonhoven, Hasselt, Genk, Heusden-Zolder, Houthalen-Helchteren, Lummen and Diepenbeek.
This unique water-rich area with 1,175 ponds, together representing around 700 ha water and reeds, lies in the heart of Limburg. These ponds make the region a top area for a large number of rare animal and plant species.
Without this pond region as a 'breeding ground' many species in Flanders would already have died out...
Together with other partners, Regionaal Landschap Lage Kempen wants to revalue this pond region.
De Wijers is not only a top region in terms of nature. The region also has culture-historical and tourist assets.n-Helchteren the domains of Hengelhoef and Kelchterhoef are in the middle of De Wijers.
In addition, this is a region with a rich cultural history, a nicely varied landscape, a flourishing economy and top tourist attractions such as Bokrijk, Kelchterhoef, Hengelhoef, Domain Kiewit, Bovy and circuit Zolder.
It is only by walking that you truly discover the beauty of the 'De Wijers' region.

The marked out routes bring you to the very heart of this exceptional area with ponds, woods and moorland.

De Wijers bicycle circuit
You can also come and discover the De Wijers region by bicycle. A special themed cycling map has been made for De Wijers.
Via the Limburg bicycle route network, these 5 circuits bring you from one top tourist attraction to another. With the purple circuit you can explore the nicest spots in Houthalen-Helchteren and the surrounding area. On the way you will have the opportunity to take a breather in one of the cycling cafés.
